Protect your equipment

Keep proof of purchase and serial numbers together

Accurate records make it easier to identify equipment, support an insurance claim and provide the right details when reporting theft.

What this page can help with

The serial-number result is supplied by theft.co.za from its own database. Micropoint does not control or independently verify that information. A result does not replace proof of ownership or a report to SAPS.

Check a serial number

Enter the serial number exactly as it appears on the equipment. Theft.co.za will check it against the records in its database.

The result opens on theft.co.za in a new tab. The serial number is sent directly to that provider over HTTPS and is not submitted to Micropoint.

If equipment is lost or stolen

Prepare the information before you report it

Clear details help the relevant authorities identify the correct equipment.

  1. Gather the details

Record the make, model, item description and exact serial number. Keep the invoice or other proof of purchase with these details.

  2. Report it to SAPS

Report the incident promptly, provide the equipment details and retain the case or reference number supplied to you.

  3. Keep one complete record

Store the report reference, proof of purchase, serial numbers and insurer correspondence together for future follow-up.

Buying second-hand equipment

Check the item and the seller carefully

Before paying

  • Ask for proof of ownership or the original invoice
  • Match the serial number on the item, packaging and documents
  • Check that labels have not been removed, altered or replaced

If something looks wrong

  • Do not continue with a purchase you cannot verify
  • Do not rely on a serial number alone as proof of ownership
  • Contact SAPS if you reasonably suspect that goods are stolen
